Healing from trauma of any kind can be a long, painful, and sometimes confusing experience. When our trauma is due to an abusive relationship, it can feel like we are trying to rediscover ourselves AND find healing at the same time. Because of this, therapeutic care becomes a vital part of a survivorâs overall care and journey.
With funding from the Health Forward Foundation, Rose Brooks Centerâs clinical care now includes an Assessment and Coordination Counselor. This is a new role in the clinical department, and it has had a great impact on clinical assessments for all new shelter residents and resource connections and support. Because the new counselor position is focused on initial client assessments and support planning, our therapists are able to focus on individual therapy services and the long-term mental health care survivors of domestic violence need.
As an example of further impact of the Assessment and Coordination Counselor position, with the added attention to support planning, survivors are more motivated and able to implement the safety and support strategies outlined in their plan. Not to mention, therapists are able to accept more clients than they ever have before.
